“Windows to the World” mine view set to open - CBS 3 Duluth

HIBBING, MN — Windows to the world. That’s the concept behind the new mine view in Hibbing which is opening up to the public for the first time this weekend.

It’s a project three years in the making and it all began because of mining. You’ll recall, Cleveland-Cliffs wanted to expand at Hibbing Taconite and that meant mining under the former location of the mine view.

So, they decided to move it. Peter Hyduke, Director of City Services in Hibbing, said the mine view is a main tourist attraction on the Iron Range and it was important to the community to keep it open.

“It’s one of the only active mine views in North America, and it’s a great change because we’ve gone from just a simple view to basically an experience, I feel, with this and a 360 view.”

The new mine view was designed by Andrew Lucia, an architect, and Hibbing native.

If you’d like to see it for yourself you can do so starting Saturday, May 25.

Make sure to tune into Eye On Mining Tuesday at 10 p.m. on CBS 3 as we explore the site further and hear from locals about what it means to them.
