Turkish Energy Ministry cancels tenders for 1102 mine sites - Ahval

The Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources has cancelled tenders for a total of 1102 mine sites, including an area allotted for a controversial gold mine project on the country’s largest island of Gökçeada.

The announcement was made by the Ministry’s Mining and Petroleum Affairs General Directorate (MAPEG), which stated the tenders would be postponed to a later, unspecified date.

Included in group 156 of mine site cancellations is land in Gökçeada in the Aegean Sea, where plans for the construction of a mine gold mine have caused widespread criticism.

Environmentalists and locals maintain drilling and construction for project by the Merih Mining Company threatens to damage the environment in the region, which is a popular destination for tourists.

Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) deputy Mahmut Tanal who brought the gold mine project to Turkey’s attention, shared the news on Twitter, stating that the area was still not safe.

‘’The tenders have been postponed. They’ll be looking out for an opportunity. We’ll be keeping an eye on the matter,’’ Tanal said.
