Early mine crash report: Victim was ejected from truck after it left road, flipped - Duluth News Tribune

The victim of fatal vehicle crash at the ArcelorMittal's Minorca mine in Virginia last week was ejected from the truck he was driving when it left the roadway and flipped, according to a preliminary report by the Mine Safety and Health Administration.

A draft of a preliminary report of the accident dated Nov. 7, but not posted on MSHA's website until this week, said Kenneth Mattson, 51, was driving a Freightliner M2 Business Class service truck that left the road, hit a berm and flipped onto its side on Nov. 5.

"A mobile maintenance mechanic was traveling east on the pit haulage road when the service truck he was operating left the roadway, contacted a berm and flipped onto its side. The victim was ejected from the cab of the vehicle," the report said.

MSHA's preliminary reports do not draw conclusions on the cause of the crash. The agency typically releases a more detailed final report with analysis from the investigation several months after an incident.

An ArcelorMittal spokesperson would not comment on the report. The spokesperson declined to answer whether Mattson was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash or how the company would prevent a similar crash from occurring in the future.

The company directed the News Tribune to a statement it made after the crash.

The vehicle crash is the second such incident at the Minorca mine this year.

In April, a haul truck carrying iron ore overturned at Minorca, spilling about 100 gallons of diesel fuel. The truck slid down an embankment as it prepared to unload ore into a stockpile. The driver was taken to the hospital out of precaution and later released.

It's Minorca Mine's first death since June 8, 2007 when Donavon Ray Dunblazier, 49, of rural Gilbert, was killed when the mobile crane he was operating tipped over. According to MSHA data, no other Iron Range mines have reported a death since then.
