Queensland miner dies in underground accident - 9News

A worker has died at an underground coal mine in Queensland, taking the state's mine and quarry death toll to seven in the past 18 months.

The worker was killed about 11.50pm yesterday at the Carborough Downs mine site at Coppabella in the Bowen Basin.

Mine owner Fitzroy Australia Resources says the worker's family has been notified and all operations have been suspended until further notice.

Police and other authorities have launched investigations into the cause of death.

Fitzroy Australia Resources chief executive Grant Polwarth says support is being offered to the worker's family.

"We are deeply saddened by this news and Fitzroy extends our deepest sympathies to the family, friends and colleagues of the worker," he said in a statement today.

The death is the seventh at Queensland mines and quarries in the past year and a half.

The previous death occurred in July, when 27-year-old Jack Gerdes died at the Baralaba North coal mine in central Queensland after being caught between an excavator and safety stairs.

That sparked a new safety push by industry and the state government including more money for mine inspectors and another chief mines inspector.

A safety re-education program was carried out for the state's 50,000 mine and quarry workers.

But the industry is still waiting to hear if the government will agree to its calls for industrial manslaughter laws to extend to the resources sector.

There have also been reviews into the effectiveness of Queensland's mining health and safety regulations, and why mine workers have died and how safety can be improved generally.

In August, the state Labor government voted down an opposition push for a three-month parliamentary inquiry into mine safety.

Mines Minister Anthony Lynham told parliament an inquiry would divert attention, time and resources from immediate action to improve safety.

Dr Lynham will be briefed on the latest death on Tuesday morning.

"My thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of the miner. The mines inspectorate will investigate fully, an inspector is already on site," he said.
