Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) has announced what it calls the Flexi Fare for its Electric Train Service (ETS). The company says this is a “method used to determine fares based on passenger travel options” and we noticed that it is quite to similar to the system used by airlines such as AirAsia.
To be precise, there are three elements that will determine the price of your fare. They are your travel details, seat type, and your purchase period, as well as the purchase medium. For example, the Flexi Fare will give you cheaper tickets if you book tickets ahead of time. Judging from the FAQ, you’ll also likely get cheaper tickets if you travel during off-peak periods.
Concession rates are also maintained for Flexi Fare tickets. This applies to retired government servants and their spouses, senior citizens, children aged between four and 12, people with disabilities, students with a KTM i-card, members of the police and armed forces as well as firefighters. This also applies to Business Class fares as well.

The Flexi Fare for the ETS will be implemented beginning 1 March 2020. You can start booking tickets from 15 January onwards. KTMB is also offering free seating options for those travelling between 1 and 30 March 2020, as part of an introductory promo.
According to a statement by the Transport Ministry (pdf), there will also be other promotions offered from time to time.
